When trekking, it’s crucial to follow specific guidelines to ensure both your safety and that of the gorillas. The gorillas operate on a very strict "don't start no sh*t, won’t be no sh*t" policy. Keep a safe distance of 8-10 feet, speak minimally and in whispers, avoid direct eye contact, and refrain from sudden movements.
"During my trek, our guide reminded us of the rules. At one point, a curious young gorilla came closer, but by staying calm and following the guidelines, the encounter remained peaceful and respectful."

4. Preparing for the Trek
The journey to see the gorillas is intense and requires preparation. Volcanoes National Park is around three hours driving from Kigali, and it’s best to stay nearby. I recommend the Virunga Inn Resort for its comfort and proximity to the park.
Example: My trek took 2.5 hours to locate the gorillas, but for some, it can be as short as one hour. The unpredictable duration and challenging terrain mean that good fitness levels are essential. Make sure to pack enough water, snacks, and wear appropriate clothing: breathable, lightweight, long pants, long sleeves, hiking boots, a hat, sunscreen, and bug spray.

5. Essential Trekking Tips for Gorilla trekking
There are a few additional tips to ensure a smooth trekking experience. Although masks are not required for the hike, they are necessary once you encounter the gorillas to protect their vulnerable immune systems. Hiring a carrier to hold your equipment and water is advisable and costs around $15.
Example: During my trek, having a carrier allowed me to focus on the hike and enjoy the scenery without the burden of my gear. The carriers are experienced and knowledgeable, often enhancing the trekking experience with their insights.
