The requirements on how to obtain it have finally been clarified and the dream of working and chilling alongside Kenya beach resorts will become a reality in 2025.

Things to know before entering Kenya

Getting into Kenya has become increasingly straightforward for digital nomads. Here are your main options:

Tourist Visa:

- Available through the eVisa system,

Pro traveller tip: You would need to apply for an ETA roughly 1 week to 3 days before your arrival

- Valid for 90 days if you are from the UK, the US, or Europe and 30 days if you are from South Africa. Citizens of the East African Community are exempted from any entry visa

- Cost: $35 USD

- Can be extended for an additional 90 days

- Apply through the official eVisa portal: evisa.go.ke

Digital Nomad Visa:

- Recently introduced in October 2024, during the Magical Kenya Travel Trade Show, in Nairobi by the Kenyan President. Since then more information has been shared recently on how to obtain it.

- Valid for up to 12 months

It will be classified as a work permit class N for digital nomads (virtual workers)

- Cost: $250 USD processing fees and $1,000 annual issuance fees

- The annual income threshold has been reduced from $55,000 USD to $24,000 USD, to encourage more foreign workers to settle in the country.

- Required documents:

To qualify for the Kenyan Digital Nomad Work Permit, applicants must fulfil the following criteria:

- Hold a valid passport

- Provide proof of remote employment with a foreign-based company

- Demonstrate a minimum annual income of $24,000 from sources outside Kenya

- Show evidence of accommodation arrangements within Kenya

- Present a clean criminal record from their country of origin or habitual residence

- Prove that their presence in Kenya will benefit the nation

Drinkable Tap Water in Kenya

It is generally not safe to drink the tap water in Nairobi or the rest of Kenya. Some newly built blocks of apartments have water filter attached to the flat taps devices.

It’s mostly advised that you buy bottles of water from the shops, or have 5-litre bottles delivered to your apartment.

I recommend bringing a reusable water bottle, I have a few from my hiking days, which I always use in Africa every day, to make sure I stay hydrated throughout the day. Restaurants, gyms and most of the apartments will have a water dispenser you can use to refill.

Kenya's climate varies by region, but generally offers year-round workability:

- December to March: Hot and dry (peak season)

- April to June: Long rains (lower prices)

- July to October: Cool and dry (ideal working weather)

- November: Short rains (good deals on accommodation)

You can reach the country by Flights one of its two international airports:

- Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Nairobi)

Vaccinations Requirements

Yellow Fever:

- A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for all travellers over 1 year of age

- The certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination

- Protection lasts for life after a single dose

- Must be obtained from a certified vaccination center

- You'll need to show the certificate at immigration upon arrival

- If you don't have it, you may be denied entry or required to get vaccinated at the airport

These 14-33 seater minibuses form the backbone of public transport, charging incredibly low fares (typically 30-100 KES/$0.20-0.70 per trip) while offering an authentic glimpse into local life. While they can get crowded during rush hours and might seem overwhelming initially, apps like Little Matatu help decode routes and timings, making them more accessible to adventurous digital nomads seeking an immersive experience.

The local currency, Kenyan Shilling (KES), trades at approximately 130-140 KES to 1 USD, and while credit cards are widely accepted in urban establishments, the real game-changer is M-PESA.

This mobile money system has revolutionised transactions in Kenya – from paying for your morning coffee to settling rent – and you can easily set it up with a local SIM card and passport. ATMs are readily available in cities and shopping centres, with major banks like Equity, KCB, and Standard Chartered offering reliable services, though it's wise to notify your home bank of travel plans and carry some cash for local markets or rural areas.

Pro tip: opt for ATMs inside banks during daylight hours, and consider opening a local bank account if staying beyond three months to avoid international transaction fees.
