1. Everything You Need to Know Before Traveling to Jamaica

What’s the absolute best way to fully enjoy any holiday? For us, it’s knowing a bit about what to expect when going to another country. To make your life easier, here’s a list of things that you need to know before you go!

Jamaica travel advisory

Of course, start by checking the Jamaica travel advisory from your country of origin, but also check with Jamaican friends when it's the best time to visit.

Jamaica travel authorisation:

Depending on your country's passport you might not need a visa for entry to Jamaica but before landing you will need to fill in online on paper and hand it over to immigration authorities prior entering the island.

Currency:

The Jamaican Dollar (JMD) is the local currency, but US Dollars are widely accepted. In most local spots, cash is king, so be sure to have some with you in case you need it!

Transportation:

Renting a car is a convenient way to explore the island, but taxis and local buses are also available. Locals are very friendly and helpful, so don’t be afraid to ask where things are. If not, feel free to ask anybody working in a shop, hotel, or even the taxi drivers, as they tend to know their way around the city best!

Knutsford Express Bus Services Main Cities Served:

Bus Route Highlights

- Comfortable, air-conditioned coaches

- Reliable intercity transportation

- Advance booking recommended

- Typical fares range: J$1,500 - J$3,000 depending on route

Taxi and Transportation Options

1. Route Taxis

   - Shared transportation

   - Fixed routes

   - Cheaper than private taxis

   - Identified by red license plates

2. Private Taxis

   - More expensive

   - Better for direct, personalized travel

   - Negotiate fare before journey

   - Look for white license plates

3. Ridesharing

   - Limited availability

   - Some apps like WhatsApp used for booking

   - Always confirm driver details

Safety:

Jamaica is generally safe for tourists, but it's always wise to stay aware of your surroundings and avoid isolated areas at night. Common sense goes a long way, so if a generally busy area in the city is very quiet, there’s a reason!

That being said, if you find yourself alone on a white sand beach with a drink in your hand, it’s safe to say you’re in paradise!

Packing:

Bring light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable shoes for exploring. A handheld fan also goes a long way, but most places will have some type of air-conditioning, so don’t stress if you forget it. Lots of the locals wear mesh vests and sandals, so take a page out of their book as it’s clear they know a thing or two about comfort.

Street Vendor:

The next few tips will help you travel more sustainably, and will ultimately boost your overall experience when visiting Jamaica

  • Support Local Businesses

Shop at local markets and eat at locally-owned restaurants. Often you’ll find that the local spots are the best, as they cook for the love of the culture and cuisine. Whilst you wait for your food you can listen to the endless selection of Reggae and Dancehall that is guaranteed to be playing, no matter where you are!

  • Respect Nature

One thing that becomes very obvious about Jamaicans is that they care deeply about the planet and their effect on it. You may not find many bins when you walk around town, so be sure to carry a bag with you to store all your trash until you get back to your hotel.

  • Local Culture and Etiquette

Be respectful of local customs and traditions, and engage with the community in a meaningful way. Jamaicans are very welcoming and love when people embrace their culture, so don’t be afraid to get involved! Try new things, wear different clothes, and most importantly - enjoy the Jamaican cuisine.

We recommend Jamaican patties, Ackee and Saltfish, Curry Goat, and the crown jewel, Jerk Chicken, which is often served with rice & peas and plantain. The only thing you’ve got to figure out now is whether you prefer your plantain sweet or savoury!

Jamaica is one of the best destinations for all travellers, whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, intimate cultural experience, or some of the best food and music in the world. There is something here for everyone, and you are definitely going to discover something you never knew you liked before.

With its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and endless adventures, it's no wonder that travellers keep coming back for more. Use this insider guide to make the most of your next holiday to Jamaica, and you'll create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. Enjoy your trip to this Caribbean paradise!

- May to November: Hurricane season (lower prices, fewer crowds)
