The Fundamentals of Wine and Food Pairing

Wine and food pairing isn't governed by strict rules, but understanding some basic principles can elevate your dining experience. Consider the intensity of your dish—delicate foods generally harmonize with lighter wines, while hearty, robust dishes complement fuller-bodied selections. Flavour profiles matter significantly too.

The richness in certain dishes can be beautifully balanced by wines with vibrant acidity, creating a palate-cleansing effect. For dishes with spice and heat, wines with subtle sweetness can provide a pleasant counterpoint.

Once you've considered both the body and flavour characteristics of your meal, you can then explore specific wine varieties that might create that perfect match. Remember that personal preference ultimately trumps any guideline—the best pairing is always the one you enjoy most.

Chef's Set Menu with Wine at Cavalli, Stellenbosch

The multi-course experience might include unexpected combinations like their Cremello (Chenin Blanc/Verdelho blend) paired with hay-smoked trout, or their flagship red blend alongside pasture-raised beef aged in-house. What distinguishes this pairing is its commitment to sustainability—the restaurant works closely with the estate's gardeners to incorporate estate-grown produce, creating a closed-loop system that expresses the property's terroir in both food and wine. This holistic approach represents the future direction of food and wine pairing experiences at Winery Cape Town.

FAQS About South African Wine Tourism

What are the best ways to find out the opening hours for wineries in South Africa?

Most South African wineries maintain updated information on their websites and social media channels regarding their opening hours. For the most reliable information, it's advisable to check the official Wine of South Africa website (WOSA) or download apps like Wineroute or Winetimes, which provide real-time information about operating hours, special events, and tasting fees.

During peak season (December- February), many estates extend their hours, while during winter (June-August), some may operate on reduced schedules or by appointment only.

What are the best transportation options to visit wineries in Cape Town or around Johannesburg?

In Cape Town and the surrounding winelands, options include private wine tour companies (Wine Flies, Explore Sideways), dedicated wine route shuttle services, and ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt, which are widely available. For a more personalised experience, consider hiring a private driver for the day (approximately R1,500 -2,500).

Around Johannesburg, the primary wine region is the Cradle of Humankind area, where private tours or self-driving are the main options. Always arrange a designated driver or transportation service if planning to enjoy multiple tastings.

How can I find out about the shoulder season for South Africa?

South Africa's shoulder seasons are typically March-May (autumn) and September-November (spring). These periods offer ideal visiting conditions with mild weather, fewer crowds, and often lower accommodation rates. Many wineries prefer these seasons for serious tasters, as they can provide more personalised experiences. The Wine Harvest Festival typically runs from late January through March, which, while technically high season, offers unique opportunities to see the harvest in action.

What are the best apps to find ride-hailing services in South Africa?

The most reliable ride-hailing apps in South Africa are Uber and Bolt (formerly Taxify), both of which operate extensively in major cities and wine regions. InDriver is gaining popularity as an alternative. For wine region transportation specifically, apps like Wine Flies and Shireen's Wine Tours offer specialised services with knowledgeable drivers familiar with the wine routes. In more remote wine regions like Hemel-en-Aarde or Elgin, pre-arranging transportation is recommended as on-demand services may be limited.

What is the best photography equipment to bring for a South African wine tour?

A versatile camera setup for South African wine country should include a good quality DSLR or mirrorless camera with a wide-angle lens (16-35mm) for landscape and vineyard shots, a standard zoom (24-70mm) for food and wine photography, and possibly a macro lens for close-up details of wines and food pairings. A polarising filter helps manage the bright South African sunlight and enhances the vibrant colours of the vineyards. A lightweight tripod is useful for low-light cellar tours and sunset vineyard shots. Don't forget extra batteries and memory cards, as remote estates may not have charging facilities readily available.

Which airlines offer direct routes to South Africa from the US, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa?

Direct flights from the US are available through United Airlines (Newark to Cape Town/Johannesburg) and Delta (Atlanta to Johannesburg). From Europe, direct services include British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Lufthansa from multiple cities.

From the Middle East, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad offer extensive connections. Within Africa, South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and RwandAir provide the most comprehensive networks. Air France recently increased their Paris-Cape Town direct service, while Turkish Airlines offers good value connections through Istanbul from multiple continents.

What is the average price of a wine tasting in South Africa?

Standard wine tastings in South Africa typically range from R50-R150 ($3-$9) for a selection of 5-6 wines. Premium or reserve tastings generally cost R150-R350 ($9-$20). Specialised food and wine pairings, as described in this article, range from R200-R800 ($12-$45) depending on the complexity and exclusivity.

Many estates waive the tasting fee with wine purchases over a certain amount. Compared to Napa Valley or European wine regions, South African wine tasting experiences offer exceptional value, particularly for higher-end experiences.

What are the top music festivals in Africa that could fit around a 2-week trip to South Africa?

Cape Town International Jazz Festival (March/April) is perfectly timed for autumn wine touring. Other options include OppiKoppi (October, Limpopo Province), Rocking the Daisies (October, Western Cape), and AfrikaBurn (April/May, Tankwa Karoo), which can all be incorporated into wine country itineraries.

For international visitors, the MTN Bushfire Festival in Eswatini (May) or Zanzibar's Sauti za Busara (February) can be excellent add-ons to a South African wine tour, accessible via short flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town.

When is Fashion Week in South Africa and in which city?

South African Fashion Week (SAFW) typically takes place in October in Johannesburg, while AFI Cape Town Fashion Week is usually held in March/April. Both events showcase South African designers and are increasingly incorporating wine-themed events and collaborations with wineries.

The Rise Art Fair in February (Johannesburg) and Investec Cape Town Art Fair (February) also feature fashion components and wine partnerships, making them good additions to a cultural itinerary that includes wine tourism.
