Important Things to know before visiting Zanzibar
1) The airports in Zanzibar
There are three large islands in Zanzibar (Zanzibar Island, Pemba and Mafia Island), each island has its own airport so there are three airports in Zanzibar
Zanzibar's unique geography and infrastructure require careful planning for a smooth trip. The archipelago has three main islands (Zanzibar Island, Pemba, and Mafia Island), each with its own airport. Most international travellers arrive at ZNZ Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume Airport, but it's crucial to note that many popular beach resorts can be up to two hours away, with one-way transfers costing around $70.
2) Money, Currency exchange and ATM fees
Financial preparation is key when visiting Zanzibar. Bring cash rather than relying on cards or ATMs, as ATM withdrawals often dispense local shillings at unfavourable rates and incur additional fees. The limitations of local banking infrastructure make cash transactions the most practical and economical choice for most purchases.
3) It is cheaper to book tours when you get to Zanzibar than paying online
For the best value on activities and excursions, wait to book tours until after arrival rather than booking online or through resorts. Local tour guides typically offer significantly better rates than international booking platforms, allowing you to experience more of what Zanzibar has to offer while staying within budget.
4) Best Seasons to visit Zanzibar
January to March:
brings the island's hot season, when the sun puts on its most dazzling performance. This is when most travelers flock to Zanzibar's shores, and for good reason! During my January visit, even with occasional cloudy moments, the South Coast was absolutely magical. Think comfortable temperatures perfect for both beach lounging and exploring the historic Stone Town. The sea breeze keeps things pleasant, and the waters are crystal clear for snorkeling and diving.
Now, April and May :
might make you raise an eyebrow – it's the long rainy season. But here's a little secret: sometimes Mother Nature throws a delightful curveball, blessing visitors with unexpectedly dry spells. If you're a bargain hunter who doesn't mind taking a chance on the weather, this could be your sweet spot. The North Coast particularly shines during this period, with its protected beaches and stunning resorts offering amazing low-season deals.
For those who prefer playing it safe, June through October :
is your golden ticket. These months bring cool, dry weather that's absolutely perfect for exploring everything Zanzibar has to offer. The East Coast becomes a paradise during this time, with steady breezes making it ideal for kitesurfing and beach walks. The cooler temperatures mean you can comfortably wander through spice plantations and get lost in Stone Town's narrow alleyways without breaking a sweat.
November and December
bring what locals call the "short rains." But don't let that discourage you! These brief daily showers typically last just long enough for you to enjoy a refreshing cocktail under cover before the sun emerges again. The Northern coast is your best bet during these months, where the rain patterns are more predictable and the infrastructure is well-suited to handle the brief afternoon showers.
Remember, each season in Zanzibar offers its own unique charm and experiences. Whether you're seeking peak beach weather, better deals, or fewer crowds, there's a perfect time for your visit. The key is matching your travel style and preferences with what each season has to offer.
Want my personal recommendation? Target the shoulder seasons – either late October or early December.
Also read our 2-week itinerary in Zanzibar. You'll find fewer crowds, reasonable prices, and generally good weather, plus you'll get to experience the island's authentic rhythm of life without the peak-season hustle.
1. Indulge in a Natural and Authentic Spa Experience - A unique experience in Zanzibar
Is there anything more relaxing than pampering yourself with a spa treatment? In Zanzibar, you can elevate this experience by opting for a natural and authentic spa that taps into the island’s abundant resources. Imagine being enveloped in the soothing scents of coconut oil, spices, and indigenous herbs as skilled hands melt your stress away.

Bamboo Element Spa , Bammboo Design Hotel , Jambiani
The most authentic spa experiences in Zanzibar often take place in serene outdoor settings, where the sounds of nature form a soothing backdrop.
Whether it's a beachfront massage or a treatment nestled in a tropical garden, these natural spas offer not just relaxation, but a connection to the island's roots.
We had the chance to try the night Spa treatment from head to body and toe , earleir in May 2024 at Bamboo Elements Spa, in Bamboo Design Hotel in Jambiani. We were treated with a natural cucumber, flower and ginger foot bath and consecutive massage.
A must-try is the traditional Zanzibari massage, which incorporates local techniques and ingredients, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and deeply relaxed.
2. Dining, Co-Working, and Wellness at Box by Ashley

Box isn't just a restaurant – it's a lifestyle hub. Their menu? A culinary symphony that celebrates local and international flavors. Each dish tells a story, and trust me, you'll want to listen. Located above the post office, in Stone Town.
If you're someone who likes to mix work with pleasure, Box by Ashley is a must-visit. This unique space combines dining, co-working, and wellness in one chic, holistic environment. Picture this: you’re sipping on a refreshing green juice while catching up on emails in an airy, light-filled space. 3. Take a Swahili Cooking Class - A Unique Experience in Zanzibar
Food is at the heart of any cultural experience, and what better way to immerse yourself in Zanzibari culture than by learning to cook its traditional dishes? Taking a Swahili cooking class is not just about preparing a meal; it’s about understanding the spices, techniques, and history that make Zanzibari cuisine so unique.
During the class, you'll likely visit a local market to pick out fresh ingredients, giving you insight into the vibrant flavors that define Swahili food. You'll learn to prepare dishes like ugali, pweza wa nazi (octopus in coconut sauce), and of course, the famous Zanzibari biryani. And the best part? You get to feast on your creations afterward. It's a hands-on experience that’s perfect for food lovers and anyone looking to take a piece of Zanzibar’s rich culinary heritage home with them.

Many resorts and wellness centers offer sunset yoga classes, often held right on the beach. Riding through the island’s diverse terrains—from white sandy beaches to lush plantations—on horseback is an experience unlike any other. You'll get to see Zanzibar from a whole new perspective, with the added thrill of being on horseback.
One of the most exciting aspects of a horseback safari is the chance to encounter wildlife up close in their natural habitat. As you ride through the countryside, you might spot monkeys swinging through the trees, birds soaring overhead, and even the occasional antelope grazing in the distance. It’s a serene yet exhilarating experience that’s perfect for animal lovers and adventure seekers alike.

7. Explore the Island by Cycling the Off the Beaten Path
Cycling is one of the best ways to explore Zanzibar at your own pace, allowing you to venture off the beaten path and discover the island's hidden gems. Rent a bike and set off on an adventure, winding through quaint villages, past emerald green rice paddies, and along the rugged coastline.
As you pedal your way through Zanzibar, you'll encounter friendly locals, vibrant markets, and stunning natural scenery. 8. Try Kayaking Around Smaller Islands and Mangroves - A Unique Experience in Zanzibar
For a peaceful yet adventurous day out, grab a kayak and explore Zanzibar's smaller islands and mangroves. Kayaking allows you to get up close and personal with the island’s stunning natural surroundings, from the crystal-clear waters to the rich biodiversity of the mangroves.
Paddling through the mangroves is an experience like no other. The labyrinth of narrow channels and dense foliage creates an almost mystical atmosphere, where you can spot exotic birds, crabs scuttling across the roots, and maybe even a glimpse of a sea turtle. For a more open-water adventure, paddle your way to one of the smaller surrounding islands, where you can stop for a secluded picnic or a swim in the warm, inviting waters.

9. Fine Dining on the Southeast Coast: The Rock in Michamwi, Shanga in Paje, Fahari Off the Grid
The Rock restaurant in Michamwi
When it comes to dining in Zanzibar, the southeast coast is where you’ll find some of the island’s most exquisite restaurants.
We no longer present the 12 table seater The Rock restaurant, accessible either by foot or by small fisherman boat whenever the time is high.
You’ve surely been bombarded during the pandemic of amazing photoshoot IG post with beautiful dresses of female travellers posing.
We’ve tasted it ourselves in May 2022, our first time in Zanzibar and loved the Grilled lobster and fries. The service is of high quality, we do love the homely feel African decoration and the attentiveness of the staff. I think i put too much salt on my fries by accident the container opened completely.
They replaced the plate of fries instantly without hesitation free of charge.
The mighty surprise you will have been the cool back garden/ lounge with a full view on the ocean. Great space to chill as a couple or with your girlfriends with fresh just or some cocktails. Having your velvety ice cream dessert.
The Rock in Michamwi is perhaps the most iconic of them all—this tiny restaurant perched on a rock in the Indian Ocean offers stunning views and a menu of fresh seafood that’s as unforgettable as the location.
